My husband, the sweetie
07.28.04 (8:46 am) [edit]
My husband brought me presents when he came back from tiling the condo with my dad! Sugar-free chocolate from the excellent chocolate shop up there and a cute red nightshirt from the Cows ice-cream/cute things with cows store. It has Winnie the Moo on it, how perfect is that for children's librarian me? :)

Hair crisis continues
07.27.04 (3:09 pm) [edit]
I got it highlighted on Friday and "a little lighter" turned into yellow. I give up, I'm going to have to try a different stylist. My friend Cassie at work actually laughed at it today. She apologized, but just couldn't help it. It's really, really bad. My sweet husband keeps saying he likes it, which I thank him for, but it's just not right. Fortunately, my hair grows pretty quickly, but for now, ugh.
Fortunately there's another stylist there who seems pretty cool. I saw her turned a drab housewife cut into a very cute, hip one. I hate abandoning hairdressers, I feel so guilty, but at least at this place, since you can't make an appointment ahead of time, I can hopefully walk in and get her. And I wrote down everything that's wrong with this one and what I do want, so hopefully I won't suffer hair amnesia this time and just take whatever they decide to give me.
Although I'm a bit worried. A friend of mine actually brought in a photo and was very specific about what she wanted last time she got it cut and ended up with nothing like it. What the hell is wrong with hairdressers?

My husband is all moved in!
07.27.04 (3:04 pm) [edit]
|
A year and a bit after our marriage, my husband finally has all of his possessions, hooray! He'd left a bunch with his buddies who were going to be visiting Washington state and they finally made their visit this week, bringing a whole bunch of boxes of books, comic books, and other stuff (including a Monty Python Black Knight action figure, a stuffed Taz, and orangutan slippers). Now, if only our apartment wasn't so insanely tiny...

It happened again!
07.22.04 (6:29 pm) [edit]
Another bad haircut! Why, oh why does this keep happening? I swear, the girl never cuts it the same way more than twice in a row.
It was outta-control long, so this morning I finally had a chance to get to the salon. I tried asking for a general trim, just a bit of shaping, trim the bangs (she's the one who stuck me with the stupid bangs I didn't ask for, so I have to keep getting them trimmed). But rather than thinning them out and making them barely-there bangs, as before and as I wanted, she gives me short, thick ones! Ugh. I should've known better, she's done it before. I had to get her to thin them out 3 times and it still looks crappy -weird chunky pieces.
And she can't seem to get the concept of just a bit of simple layering few layers, it always ends up with a bunch of short ones. Plus, I've had this weird combed-back, sprayed into place bit on top all day, I don't know what the hell it's supposed to be, but it's there til I can wash my hair. And who knows where it'll end up - maybe it's part of the horrifying bangs.
I really don't know what to do, it doesn't seem to be any better at other salons or with different stylists at that one. At least when it was all one length and just hung there I didn't have to worry about getting freak-show haircuts. It didn't look great, but it was easy and I always knew what I was in for at the hairdresser, a simple trimming of the ends.

Another reason for me to lose weight...
07.22.04 (2:21 pm) [edit]
As if I wasn't already worried about my chances of having kids, there's this article about obesity in diabetic mothers, http://65.54.246.250/cgi-bin/...%3a%2f%2fthediabeticnews% 2ecom%2fnews%2f629%2eshtm l -which says that "...obesity in mothers is one of the most decisive factors contributing to the appearance of congenital malformations in their children, even more so than the seriousness of the diabetes."
Not that that's really surprising, I suppose, but still - like I didn't have enough to worry about between the diabetes and the fact that I'll be in my mid-30's by the time we're ready to have kids - yeesh.

All alone
07.20.04 (2:35 pm) [edit]
My dad is a big-time skiier and when he retired years ago he became a volunteer Mountain Host up at Blackcomb Mountain, our mega ski resort area. My mom and I were very worried that he'd spend the night in their camper in the ski area parking lot, so they eventually invested in a condo up there which they can rent out when he's not using it.
That was an intro to me being all alone - my husband had gone up there with dad for the week to re-tile the bathroom and kitchen. It will feel weird to be a bachelorette this week. I'll have to try and do lots of girlie stuff. :)

Summer fun
07.19.04 (9:04 am) [edit]
My husband and I had a lovely evening on Friday - we went out and played Nerf football. I don't think adults play enough, we forget how fun it is. He's trying to teach me how to throw. He's been semi-successful, although my spiral is sporadic and I can't get it very high. But given my new need for tons of exercise, it was nice to have a break from the usual post-dinner walks, although they're nice, too.
There were a bunch of sprinklers going off nearby, so as we headed back I frolicked among them and had a great time. I'd forgotten the joy of getting soaked by sprinklers. I looked a bit like a wet t-shirt contest entrant on our way back to our apartment, but it was worth it for all the fun I had. :)

T-shirt of the week
07.16.04 (3:18 pm) [edit]
My husband bought some fun t-shirts at Target when we were down at Birch Bay. Here's my favourite:

It actually does kind of work, apart from the Ha! part. We went for a walk while he was wearing it and he blended into the surrounding gardens very well. :)

More meds
07.15.04 (1:35 pm) [edit]
Went to the doctor this morning to (finally) ask him about adding another pill to my daily regimen. They suggested at the diabetes clinic that I add another one (I currently take one in the morning and one at night) and split it in half so that I'm taking at least some with every meal and before bed. The maximum dose of Metformin is apparently 5 pills a day, so I don't feel like I'm doing too badly. It's mainly that my blood sugar's really high after lunch at work, because I can't get much exercise here in the library and often can't escape for even a little walk.
I hope it doesn't upset my stomach even more than it already is, though. You'd think they could manage to make medications that don't make you sick in a different way, wouldn't you? Well, we'll control your blood sugar, but to punish you for having diabetes, you'll have to suffer random gut-wrenching cramps and other stomach problems. Gee, thanks.
But hopefully it'll just be until I can lose some more insulin-resisting weight. I have my next 3-month blood test in August, so I guess I'll have to see how I'm doing then.

Radio Star :)
07.14.04 (1:29 pm) [edit]
Well, she called back this morning, having apparently gotten my message too late yesterday to call me back. She asked if I was still interested, I said yes, and she said she'd call back in half an hour, as she had 2 other interviews still to do.
So I waited nervously until the phone rang and lo and behold, half an hour later, I was on the radio! Since it's the Chinese-language radio station, she'd explained that I'd need to wait in between questions for her to translate. I'd wondered about that, my name is clearly not one of Asian ethnicity and I couldn't figure out why they were interested in talking to me on the Chinese station. But it worked out fine. She asked the question in English, I answered, and then she translated it all. It was kind of funny, because every once in a while a bit of it would be in English, like "short story, poem, comic" or our library's web site address. So, that was pretty cool, I must say. Not sure if it'll have an impact on our number of entries, but it's neat that even a small media outlet took notice of the fax our PR dept. sent out.

Gigi, Radio Personality
07.13.04 (3:52 pm) [edit]
|
I got a call from a local radio station this afternoon wanting to interview me about our teen writing contest tomorrow, which was totally exciting. But the library was so busy with summer reading club, I was downstairs helping on the desk and didn't get the message until later, so the woman wasn't around when I called back. I hope she'll try to re-schedule. It would kind of be nice to get more than 14 hours notice, though, I'm often busy with storytimes and outreach on Wednesday afternoons. But I hope she'll call back, because that would be so cool! Before I decided to be an English major, I was going to study Communications at university with the goal of becoming a DJ. :)

Ah, Ikea...
07.10.04 (3:53 pm) [edit]
I love Ikea. The silly names, the bright colours... Although almost every time we go, they're out of what we want. We decided to finally buy a big shelving unit to try and stash some of our clutter and books and whatnot. We carefully looked at their online catalogue, measured, etc. We got to the store yesterday and found that the one we'd looked at wasn't quite right, so we revised the plan. We then went allll the way through the showrooms and when we finally got to the self-serve pickup area and they were out of them!! Bastards, why couldn't they put an out of stock sign out upstairs? They wan to lure you through all of their goods.
So we are still shelfless. But we did get this nifty coffee table:

I wish I could see this!
07.10.04 (9:54 am) [edit]
The other day my husband heard about the Broadway musical version of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It's called Spamalot and it stars Tim Curry, Hank Azaria, and David Hyde-Pierce. That's so cool and what perfect actors to choose (next to the original Pythons, of course.)

I wish I could jet off to New York for opening night!
Everyone sing along now...
Bravely bold Sir Robin Brought forth from Camelot. He was not afraid to die, Oh, brave Sir Robin! He was not at all afraid to be killed in nasty ways. Brave, brave, brave Sir Robin...

Off the bandwagon
07.08.04 (3:35 pm) [edit]
|
That's me. I've fallen off the eating-properly and exercising wagon and I just don't feel like getting back on. I knew I'd go off it somewhat while on vacation, but I thought I'd be able to get back on when I got home. But I'm tired, cranky, and devoid of hope now. Even when it's necessary for a severe health problem, a diet is still a diet and we all know how easy those are to stick to. :(

Mmm...foot rubs...
07.08.04 (1:30 pm) [edit]
A while ago when I was complaining about my sore feet, Islandartist and Librarianguish recommended reflexology. While we haven't really studied it or anything, I remembered their advice at Bath and Body Works and bought a pair of their reflexology socks. They're great! They resulted in a very excellent foot massage from my husband. :)
I also got some of their Footloose and Fancy Fizz foot soak, which is neat. I think it would work better in a bubbling footbath contraption, though. That'll have to be my next foot-pampering purchase.

I'm back!
07.06.04 (7:20 pm) [edit]
We had a lovely time at Birch Bay, as always. Highlights:
- We bought tons of American junk food you can't get up here, including many flavours of Cheez-Its, Nestle Tollhouse cany bars, Phish Food, Gardettos pretzel snacks, a lot of low-carb snack bars, Russell Stover no-sugar chocolates, sugar-free pudding (may be up here somewhere, but I can't find it)... There's so much sugar-free and low-carb stuff, it's amazing. And a lot of the containers even say Attention Diabetics with a note about the carb or sugar content. America is apparently the place to be if you're diabetic.
- Saw Spider-man 2. My husband pronounced it better than the original.
- Shopped at American stores we don't have up here - Target, Bath and Body Works, Lane Bryant, and Suncoast.
- I went to the RV park's aquafit class 3 times. Twice it was just me and the elderly lady instructor and once it was about 6 people with no instructor at all. I think they need to get a bit more organized.
- We watched amazing fireworks on the beach. The whole area surrounding the bay was lit up with folks celebrating the Fourth of July. It was very cool. We aren't allowed such firework glory in BC.
- We all did lots of reading and played cards and our new board game, Gray Matter.
- And we spent a day in Lynden, a Dutch-themed small town/farming community. It's a lovely town - I wanted to live there. Lovely tree-lined streets, quaint town centre, and a really nice new library that was quiet and not populated by smack addicts. I could get used to that.

Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend!
